Folk Workshops

The rise of folk music as a popular genre began with performers whose own lives were rooted in the authentic folk tradition.  For example, Woody Guthrie,  Pete Seeger,  The Weavers (Seeger’s group), Burl Ives, The Limeliters, Harry Belafonte the Kingston Trio, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, The Pogues, The Corrs, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Mr. Fox, Steeleye Span, The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, The Mamas and the Papas, Alan Stivell (a Celtic harpist, multi-instrumentist and singer ), The Pogues and The Corrs, Dave Alvin, Ani DiFranco, and Steve Earle, Phranc and The Knitters, Steve Goodman, John Prine, Cheryl Wheeler, Bill Morrissey, and Christine Lavin, just to name few, have continued to make the and keep the tradition of acoustic non-classical music alive in the United States.

As you can see folk music covers an incredibly broad spectrum.  The examples above don’t even include the unknown number of artists, groups, and styles that come from all corners of the globe.  We invite you to bring something different and unique to our folk classes and make it not only an opportunity to play with a group, but to learn more about the tradtions and history behind the music you are playing and make your folk experience truly unique.

“Contemporary folk…like us contemporary folk… so fully fueled by those singer-songwriters….those coffee-house circuit die-hard  purists….traditionalist innovators…cultural revivalists…musicologists united…propagating a form of folk, for the folk…personal and sometimes satirical…always melodic and always quite lyrical…an electrifying acoustic performance for the world to enjoy…”
