Master Class:
Fretboard Harmony
With Erik Lindquist
Tired of playing the same 3 or 4 chords over and over again? Try looking at the guitar in a different light. How do I change up my chords, because 80 to 90% of the time I am comping for someone else? Most players look to the standard chords because they work (that is good) but what about trying something else? Here are some ideas that you could look at in order change up your chords: Experiment with different voicing. All the inversions of the basic triad. Spread voicing (basic triads), moving them up and down the neck. Chords that have open strings in them (with fretted notes). Dominant chords and their friends! It is not how many chords you know, but what you do with the ones you know.
Erik Lindquist is an SF native who began playing guitar in high school, then went on to SRJC and studied with Randy Vincent through Sonoma State. Erik moved to NY and studied with Vic Juris for a couple of years, and with John Abercrombie. Some of the players Erik has had the pleasure to play with are: Bruce Forman, Paul McCandless, Dave Douglas, Eric Alexander, John Stowell and many more.
"Erik is a true chordal master on guitar; he's constantly teaching me new things about chords and harmony on the instrument." -Michael LaMacchia
